Little Citizens of the World

Crossing the US by train

It takes 4 days to cross the US by train (depending on your path) and it’s an amazing way to see the country without the stress of driving.  Many years ago, I lived in California for a while and drove out there from Massachusetts.  I also drove back again a year later when I had had enough of the heat.  It was a wonderful experience that I’m glad I was able to have but it was also very tiring.

This time around, with the kids, I wanted to take a train.  I wanted to relax and  share the wonder of the landscape with them.  To go to bed in the mountains of West Virginia and wake up nearing Chicago is incredible.

The corn fields go on for hundreds of miles.  I think we spent an entire day passing corn fields.  One morning we woke up to a gorgeous Colorado sunrise with misty fields and sparce trees.  By late afternoon, there wasn’t a tree to be seen all the way to the horizon line yet it was still Colorado.

New Mexico was beautiful.  It was obvious we were leaving the plain states as the land became more rocky.  Sunset over the this mesa was absolutely stunning.  Unfortunately, this photo doesn’t even begin to reflect the colours I could see at the time.  Check out the moon though!
